Voice in the Night

Steve Rubel of Micro Persuasion discusses on his web blog the amazing changes that are occuring to the public relations field every day with the new technologies like IPod and the ever interesting Web Log or Blog. One such entry he talked about how in the corporate world there are the lead singers (Bill Gates, Jack Welch, and others)....

In the message command and control era, corporate rock stars like Bill Gates, Scott McNealy, Lee Iacocca and Jack Welch were the dominant corporate voices - the lead singers if you will. Employees, meanwhile, were the important backup singers. Once in awhile they would get to hit or high note or two in the media. Still they had to be cautious never to outshine the star.

I am in a band, this is my band leader and i am just a back up singer but now i have some voice!

Wedding Crashers

Last night i saw Wedding Crashers. This will be the first Petrock Friends Official Movie Rating. I gave the movie 3 Elephants. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn were hysterical. The writers should pat themselves on their backs for the ability to maintain the high energy from start to finish. The intent of the movie caused me some trouble. While i thought this was going to be a comedy, it turned to be a romantic comedy. Take a date, not your sister or buddies.

Dusty Comment Worth While

Cub's Manager Dusty Baker has been very good at getting on and then jumping off the hot seat. The Cubs went on a 7 game skid that put them 8 games out of the wild card, then Swept the Marlins. During the 7 game skid they also fell behind the Astros. Before the break the Cubs were one game under .500 with a 43-44 record. After the break the Cubs had a decent little homestand taking 3 out of 4 from the Pirates. Woody, Prior and Zambrano took the wins, while Maddux took the single lose. After the win on Friday, Dusty Baker had this little tid bit about Woody:

"You don't have to strike people out to dominate hitters," Baker said. "Everybody likes to see the strikeouts but the strikeouts take more out of you than if they're putting it in play. The only guy who stung the ball off him all day was the same guy.

That is a very good point.

Moneyball baseball would disagree with this statement. Billy Beane of the A's, Paul D. of the Dodgers, and Bill James, Author of the complete Baseball Abstract, would arguee frivously that the strike out is just as important as a base hit. If the ball is put into play enough times, somebody is going to capitalize. People need to be a little more cautious, this era of baseball is marked with the high home runs, high strikeouts and high walks. With the emphaise on pitch counts strike out "power" pitchers can easily tally some high pitch counts which quickly pill up. The count pills up because only a few of them have control, Clemens, Hudson, Prior and Zito are the only "power" pitchers who have shown much control over the past couple of years.

Weekend

Sorry about the extended weekend absence, I was in Trego Wisconsin enjoying some good company and some even better drinks. I missed alot of Cubbies news and other stuff happend. Hopefully over the next couple of days i will be all caught up with what is going on in the world of politics, baseball and the ever popular citizen journalism debates.

Movie System

I am going to be reviewing movies here from now on. Here is how the system is going to work:

1. I am not going to see every movie released
a. I do not have the time
b. I do not have the time

2. The movies will be scaled from 0-4 in incrimints of 1/2 but not compared to other movies unless the movie is a re-make and I have seen the original then the movie will recieve two ratings. The first of the two ratings will be the stand alone score. The second rating will be the comparision. If that is to occur, I will note that.

3. Each movie recieves the 0-4 rating by achieving points in each of these 4 categories : story, intent, performances, and creativity.

Scale: 0, 1/2, 1, 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2, 4

Don't Forget that Comments are always welcome and I would like to see what you all think of the movies yourself

Depp Trouble

Has Johnny Depp become the most sought actor? With the exception of the Old School, Anchorman Comedy group (Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn) who in my personal opinoin own the world, Depp and his movies are quietly selling more and more tickets. While his earlier movies are well known, after the release of Pirates of the Caribbean, Depp has earned One Academy Award Nomination (for his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow) and a choice of roles that have turned him into one of the most sought after actors in the industry.
On Sunday Night I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which was amazing. Johnny Depp was the perfect role for Wonka. Gene Wilder is a comic legend will be remembered for his original performace but it is safe to say the two Wonka's are uncomparable but i will try to do compare the roles here: Gene Wilder is an icon in the comedy industry, starring opposite of the great Richard Pryor on many occaisions and teaming up with the legendary Mel Brooks. Wilder was able to sing songs and dance; Depp's ability to control his presence fit Tim Burton's vision perfectly. Before the formal introduction of Willy Wonka, Depp was able to hold everything back and allow his conflict to take center stage.
